Though there are many aspects to be covered, the main essence of film focuses on the period of time Dutt was heavily involved in drugs, ruining not only his health but many things to come along with it. But before we get into the climax, let’s talk about everything that leads up to it. The movie starts with Sanjay and his wife, Manyata Dutt, played by Ranbir Kapoor and Dia Mirza, approaching a London-based writer, Winnie Diaz enacted by Anushka Sharma, to write Dutt’s biography and present his version of his life to the public. Diaz, though adamant at first is then neared by Jim Sarbh, who plays a character named Zubin Mistry, real estate builder that asks Diaz not to write the biography, prompting the opposite reaction in her. Being intrigued, the established writer once again meets with Dutt in an interview to reveal his life, now directing the movie into a flashback.

In 1981, Sanjay Dutt with the help of his father, Sunil Dutt performed by Paresh Rawal, launches his acting career in Bollywood with his debut film, Rocky. Dutt gaining instantaneous fame through his first of many hits, leans into the wrong influences of the industry in terms of experimenting with drugs and heavy drinking. Dutt soon realizes that his mother is suffering from cancer and is taken to New York for treatment. At the time, Sanjay learns that his previous love interest, Ruby is ready to marry someone else, which further aggravates his descent into alcoholism and drug addiction. Dutt’s friend, Kamlesh, then gets in touch with Ruby in order to convince her to marry Sanjay as a connection such as theirs cannot be found elsewhere. Just as Ruby agrees to marry Dutt, he once again replaces into his drug addiction, upsetting Ruby with his intoxicated behaviour. Out of anger and disgust, Ruby leaves and Dutt’s addition only get stronger as the days pass. Finally seeking rehabilitation after a gruesome and painful journey, Dutt gains back his strength along with his life. A new man, Dutt is beyond what he was and even proves it by beating his dealer, who had pretended to be his friend all those days, for selling him drugs.

Upon becoming clean, Sanjay turns to rebuilding his physique as well as his career in Bollywood. To his misfortune however, he is one again held in yet another scandal in which he is allegedly accused to be associated with the 1993 Bombay bombings. Under the grounds of having possessed illegal arms supposedly supplied by the D-Company to be trafficked, Sanjay is then pronounced guilty and incarcerated for five years under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), threatening his career. He later discloses his intention behind acquiring the  three AK-56 rifles as means to ensure the safety of his family, as his father was involved in politics at that time and he felt the need to guard his younger sister, Priya Dutt from any potential harm. After a melodramatic series of events including one involving Kamlesh as severs ties with Sanjay under the false pretences, Sanjay is finally released and much to his surprise is hit with a wave of acting opportunities. With his popularity surging with his title role in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Sanjay is given the opening to act along his father. Already a personal accomplished to him, as he describes, he then triumphantly garners the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role. Unfortunately, bad luck strikes for him yet again. With the passing of his father, he is also declared guilty Bombay High Court within the same year. Though not finding him to be a terrorist for possession of deadly arms, in 2006, the court once again takes Sanjay into their custody under the Possession of Arms Act. In 2013, he is arrested for the third time by the same verdict upheld by the Supreme Court of India. Desperate to be free, Sanjay attempts to convince Winnie and Kamlesh of his innocence by explaining media’s viel influence. Successfully accomplishing what he had set out to do, Sanjay is released just in time for his completed biography, titled Kuch Toh Log Kahenge strategically translated to People will keep saying something.
