The beautiful indian-welsh model/actress Banita Sandhu who plays the comatose heroine role in Shoojit Sircar’s movie “October”, is ruling the hearts of billions with her dusky beauty, sweet accent and amazing acting skills.
1) Personal life:
Born on 22nd June 1998, Banita is currently 20 y/o. She is Sikh by religion. Her grandparents came to Britain from the Punjab, India, shortly after World War II. Both her parents are born in Britain. She and her sister was brought up by her British Indian parents in a middle class village life in Caerleon. Caerleon is a suburban town and community, situated on the River Usk in the northern outskirts of the city of Newport, Wales, United Kingdom.
Her parents were very supportive of her passion, their only condition being that she gives preference to her studies first. So she decided to move to and opt for graduation in English literature from Kings College, London. This was a strategic decision as now she can pursue both acting and her studies. She audition for different roles while pursuing graduation.
Her graduation final year is supposed to be finishing in May 2018. She is currently focusing on her studies and not entertaining any other offers.
She is writing an essay on conspiracy theories in America and whether they’re productive in articulating wider, structural issues.
From what she has experienced, she feels that though Bollywood is traditionally perceived as less progressive than western cinema, the later still showcase Indians in stereotypical roles and hence don’t have much to offer. There is a lack of versatile roles for women of Asian ethnicity in the United Kingdom.
In her views time management is a must if you want to juggle between studies and your passion. And she herself follows it religiously. For example, on a 10-hour flight, she studies, then get off the plane and go straight to a press interview, or come back from a full day’s shooting and then again studies for her final year essays.
In her spare time she loves to listen to either American singer Lana del ray or American rapper Cardi B. Currently she is listening to Daniel Caesar and loving it. She also loves to read poems excerpts. She likes Rupi kaur’s “milk and honey” and “the sun and her flowers”.
She is quite active in social media platforms like Instagram (@banitasandhu) and twitter (@banitasandhu). In Instagram she has around 161 k followers, which is expected to increase exponentially as she gets involved in more Bollywood projects after her graduation. Her favourite Instagram account is @londonblogger. It’s a page run by one of her best friend fleur raffan. She claim to be the biggest fan of her page.
She also joined twitter on Jan 2017 and has around 13k followers as of April 2018.
She is also an avid dessert lover and looks at the dessert menu first when she’s in a restaurant. She especially likes gelato (Gelato is ice cream made in the Italian style) and consider that snowflakes gelato is the best place London to have one. Mint chocolate chip or chocolate salted caramel are her favourite’s ice creams.
She is feisty regarding women’s right and consider that boys should not be excused for their inappropriate behaviour just by comically saying “boys will be boys”.
2) PROFESSIONAL LIFE:
Banita moved to London for her graduation from the outskirts of Newport in south Wales, at age of 18, with intention to follow both her studies and acting career.
She get her first commercial during her first year when her UK agent made her go to a casting in London. She was really apprehensive at first because she didn’t want to be known as a model (she always want to be known as an actor) but her agent convinced her anyway and looking back, she consider, it was the best decision she ever made.
The commercial was an advertisement series of Fun Always on with Vodafone U TB for Vodafone India, which was broadcasted during the IPL (Indian Premier League) cricket season.
She then appeared in a “FOGG body spray” commercial with tagline “naa jaane kyun kuch log bas pasand aa jaate hai”.
She then appeared in what considered to be one of the best commercial on Indian television. It was Wrigley’s Double mint’s Chewing gum commercial with “ek ajnabee haseena se” song of Kishore Kumar as background score. The ad was shot by shoojit sircar and had almost 40 million views.
Audience seemed to love banita sandhu in the ad. And as, at that time he was also searching for a new fresh face for his movie October opposite varun dhawan ; he felt that banita has to potential to fit into the character perfectly. So he took a picture of her and send it to Juhi Chaturvedi, with whom he was writing October, for consideration.
It was her second year at King’s College London when she received an offer to play the role of ”Shiuli” in shoojit sircar’s movie “October”. She immediately took up the role.
In “October”, Banita plays a versatile role, both of a hotel management student who shares a complex relationship with her fellow-student Dan (varun dhawan) and that of a comatose girl seen wheelchair-bound, ill and expressionless. The tagline reads, ‘it is not a love story but a story about love.’ The movie has bagged 40 crore in two weeks box office collection and considered as a hit.
